News of K-pop idols suffering from depression isn’t a new story. And mustering bravery to openly talk about it, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon took to her Instagram account her current mental health condition.
In a series of Instagram stories last June 16, the 30-year-old K-pop star entertained questions from her fans. In one instance, a follower asked how is she doing well, and she was quick to say no, further clarifying through another answer that she is currently “living in a slump.”
When asked if what’s she’s battling is bipolar disorder, Taeyeon answered that what she is suffering from is depression.
“I am working hard to get better by taking antidepressants,” she further revealed, asking people to not disrespect individuals who have mental illnesses.
“They are patients who are all suffering,” she defended.
After opening up about her condition, fans have expressed admiration for her honesty and gave comforting messages to show their support for the Girls’ Generation leader. The hashtag #WeLoveYouTaeyeon even trended worldwide on Twitter.
Fellow K-pop idol and close friend Yeri of Red Velvet also expressed her support for her “unnie.” She shared on her social media account a screenshot of their video call, with a caption that sweetly said: “I love you.”
In a report by Koreaboo, a doctor of neuropsychology named Dr. Son Suk Han called Taeyeon’s action a “very brave cry for help.”
“Most of the time, celebrities don’t seek treatment for depression because of the negative stereotypes society has for mental illness… [Taeyeon] took the courage to share her struggles and seek help. In this situation, the fans’ reactions are very important. If she reads malicious comments, it can worsen her symptoms,” Dr. Son further elaborated.
Earlier in March, Taeyeon held a two-night show at the Seoul Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium as encore to her sold-out solo concert tour, which began in October last year. The series of shows brought her to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, and Singapore.
She, together with the other members of Girls’ Generation, debuted in 2007 under SM Entertainment. Apart from making it big with the legendary K-pop group, she also made a name for herself as a talented vocalist with her solo releases like “Rain,” Fine,” and “Four Season” among others.
